Company picnic and a bike ride
This morning Rich and I decided to take a bike ride around Stapleton to get a "bike feel" for the neighborhood. It's a good feel. There's not a lot of paths (that we can find), but the streets are easy enough to ride on, especially for weekend morning rides to get bagels or a Starbuck's. We came back to the moho for a quick shower, then we were off to the Maverick Ranch company picnic. They put on a wonderful picnic, complete with pork chops and 2 kinds of sausage. One sausage was chicken, and the one I ate had bits of garlic inside. We talked with a lot of people who gave us suggestions for places to look for a house, best sushi, places to see, etc. By the end of the day, my head was swimming with directions and intersections. There will be plenty of time to explore it all when we're back next spring.
Ok....we need opinions on sun. If we go with the place we really like in Stapleton, we have a choice of courtyard locations. Wherever it's located, the family room, kitchen & master bedroom will have morning or afternoon sun. Which one would you choose, and why? Thanks!

Our preference after have living in the Denver area for 20 odd yearsis to have the sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. The morning sun off the kitchen warms you up for that first cup of coffee and sitting in the shade after a hard days work is relaxing. The sun can be terrible. That said you would not have a mountain view if the kitchen etc is in the afternoon shade. Each to their own just our preference if we were to settle down in Dvr again.s
I agree with Rod & Jean. I prefer the sun in the morning to take the chill off and the shade in the afternoon. Howard and I have even found this to be true living in the RV. Morning sun and evening shade.
Depends on where Snug's cage is, if she's in the living room and anything at all like the 'toos over here, it could make for some early early mornings with her :)
I'd personally take the afternoon, but thats cuz I loved looking out the back windows at my ex's to see the mountains behind their house, plus I think there's nothing more romantic than dinner with the sunset lighting the table (along with a few candles for after it sets completely). But that's just me.
I'd choose the afternoon sun if the outdoor living is off the family room, kitchen, etc. I love the early evening sun. You can always get an awning to keep the sun off the house and provide a bit of shade. cheers, a canadian
Since you saw An Inconvenient Truth, I would encourage you to site your home to take advantage of passive solar to help heat your home in winter and then plant trees or provide shading to assist with cooling in summer. Denver has a very high number of heating degree days in relation to cooling degree days, that usually equates to very hi heating bills. Here's asite with more info about siting for solar gain http://www.sustainablecommunitybuilders.com/design/
Good Luck, what an exciting time-maybe we can get together in Tucson!

We always insisted that our house faces south. That way the sun will melt the snow and ice and flowers will grow best in your back yard. I agree with Judy on adding shrubs and trees where ever needed.

We like our set up with a southwest facing front of the house. We get the hot sun in the front in the afternoon which allows us the awesome shady backyard to enjoy in the evenings -very important in the SLC heat. It can be 100 in the front yard but 80 in the back, very very comfortable. Also, the direct sunlight heats the house really nicely in the winter, allowing us to turn down the thermostat even more. The downside is that we have to shut the shades in the front in the hot summer hours between 3 and 6, to save air conditioning costs, but that hasnt bothered us.
