Paso Robles, CA; Rain Continues
Let's Drink Wine!
The cloudy, cold and rainy weather continued into Friday. What better thing to do then head out and drink some wine!
We got started after lunch. We stopped at J Lohr, just down the road from the campground. Here's what 2,000 acres of grapes looks like. It was vines as far as you could see.
We hit a few of the really big wineries; Meridian, Peachy Canyon, J lohr. The wines are OK, but you can buy them everywhere. We wanted to seek out some of the smaller producers.
Our first stop, Anglim wines, is run completely by one guy! He buys grapes, does all the work from pressing to bottling to distribution to running his tasting room. He had a great viognier we picked up. Next we stopped a Turley which is strictly zinfandels. We loved their wines; They were pricey, but we did find one under $40 bottle. Next we headed over to Tablas Creek; A producer of small lot Rhone style blends. Their wines were ok, but not enough to buy. Finally, we searched for a place called Windward; A small lot Pinot producer (yum!) but our navigation system lead us astray. We'll have to try that one another time. Since we are on a limited budget and have limited space, we behaved ourselves and only bought the 2 bottles.
By about 4pm we were getting tired and buzzed, so we headed back. On the way into the campground, we noticed some demo rigs parked up the hill. Of course, we had to explore. Turns out a local chapter of the Safari owners group was having a rally here. They are hooked up with a local RV dealer, so he had some rigs to walk-through. We chatted with some of the members, also checking out the new rigs. Since we belong to Safari International, the main owners group, they invited us up for 'happy hour' that the RV dealer was putting on(he was a member and former president of the chapter). Great, more alcohol. Needless to say, we stopped by for a drink and some good conversation. This was a local group, so none of them were full-timers. They were fascinated to hear about our travels!
It was a nice way to pass a rainy day. But, I think we're done with drinking wine for a few days!
